The road can be a long and lonesome place, whether travelling on your own for hours on end or with the kids for what feels like hours on end. This is when a little musical accompaniment or at the very least local news on the radio comes in extremely beneficial.
It goes without saying that we each have our favourite genres, artists and songs. This list here complies in no particular order, ten songs which we believe are fantastic soundtracks to any journey. There’s bound to be a few you like and possibly a few you hate, let us know what you think in the comments!
Sweet Home Alabama – Lynrd Skynrd
A driving classic for many years now, the anthem on Alabama is a much loved and well-received song choice. Guaranteed to get the whole car singing within moments and will almost certainly get stuck in your head for days!
Take Me Home, Country Roads – John Denver
Keepin’ it Country, John Denver supplies the soundtrack to countless long car journeys home. ‘Take Me Home, Country Roads’ will turn any sluggish, venture back home into an instant singalong. Nothing but nostalgia and feel-good factor, fantastic!
Bohemian Rhapsody – Queen
No top list of songs of any variety is complete without the legendary band that is Queen. The near six-minute epic truly defines the word ‘Anthem’. Bohemian Rhapsody will always generate images of Wayne’s World to those of us blessed enough to live through the ’90s but will always remain a driving anthem throughout the ages!
Highway To Hell – AC/DC
It’s only fitting that some of the songs within this list have names revolving around roads and highways. The 1979 smash hit ‘Highway to Hell” acts as a fitting accompaniment to both joyful and joyless journeys alike.
On The Road Again – Willie Nelson
No driving playlist could be complete without Willie Nelson’s classic ‘On The Road Again’. Perfectly showcasing the joys of motoring and being out there on that big ‘ol open road, travelling from destination t destination this is an anthem which deserves its place in history.
I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles) – The Proclaimers
Although technically a song about walking a vast distance, ‘I’m Gonna Be’ is one of those annoyingly addictive songs which you just can’t help but adore. If you don’t believe that the Proclaimer’s classic single isn’t worthy of a spot on this list, tell us one time you’ve listened to the song and not joined in… Exactly!
Life Is A Highway – Tom Cochrane
Recently revived for the Pixar film series ‘Cars’, ‘Life Is A Highway’ is an anthem that can truly call this list home. With the famous chorus “Life is a highway, I wanna ride it all night long…” Tom Cochrane created an anthem perfect for both car journeys and defining life.
The Passenger – Iggy Pop
Perhaps more ideal for those being chauffeured around or at least those in the back seats of the vehicle. ‘The Passenger’ by Iggy Pop, has been a fan favourite for decades and has been known to be sung on many journeys. A top track guaranteed to get the entire car singing.
Carry on Wayward Son – Kansas
There are few bands that can truly create an epic quite as Kansas did with this piece. We challenge anyone to listen to this song and not find themselves joining in OR singing it to themselves several hours later… Sometimes a classic is just a classic!
Place Your Hands On – Reef
‘Place Your Hands On’ is another song that people can’t help but join in with. Perhaps it’s the unique and simply unusual vocals that encourage listeners to put on their best “Reef” voice or maybe it’s the upbeat, fun-loving instrumentals which grab listeners by the hand. Whatever it is, it works! Be sure to pop them on when you’re driving next!
